The ‘Classics with Eyes Closed’ Series Returns to the Menorca Library Network

Through this program, the libraries offer readers access to classic works (in the broadest sense) of world literature—timeless and perpetually relevant texts—through an immersive experience that invites participants to dive into the reading through listening and imagination.

The writer Ana Haro will lead the first session of Classics with Eyes Closed, reading The Back Room (El cuarto de atrás), one of the best-known novels by Carmen Martín Gaite, in celebration of the centenary of her birth. After the reading, participants will be introduced to the life, work, and historical context of the author, encouraging a rich discussion among attendees.

For the opening session, all participating libraries will give away blindfolds so attendees can truly experience the reading “with their eyes closed.” “It will be an experience that allows participants to discover or rediscover literary treasures in every sense and from a different perspective,” said Joana M. Garau, coordinator of the Menorca Library Network.

The upcoming sessions of Classics with Eyes Closed will take place as follows:

  • May 12 – Maó Public Library – 7:00 p.m.
  • May 15 – Sant Lluís Public Library – 7:00 p.m.
  • May 16 – Es Mercadal Public Library – 7:00 p.m.
  • May 28 – Ciutadella Public Library – 7:00 p.m.
  • May 30 – Alaior Public Library – 7:00 p.m.
  • June 6 – Ferreries Public Library – 7:00 p.m.
  • June 11 – Es Castell Public Library – 7:00 p.m.
  • June 13 – Es Migjorn Gran Public Library – 7:00 p.m.
  • June 16 – Fornells Public Library – 7:00 p.m.

Writer and Virginia Woolf specialist Carme Cloquells will lead the second session of the series, which will feature selected excerpts from Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf—a novel also celebrating its centenary this year. This second session will take place during the last quarter of the year.
