Councillor Mateo highlights that it is one of the five most popular projects among nearly fifty submitted across Europe

Around thirty teams of young architects have registered for the international Europan architecture competition to participate in the rehabilitation project of Es Sindicat de Felanitx, one of the sites selected for this edition. A delegation of participants visited the historic building this Monday, which is currently generating strong interest in the contest. Europan is aimed at European architects under the age of 40 who will submit their proposals.

The Minister of Housing, Land and Mobility, José Luis Mateo, together with the President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, and the Mayor of Felanitx, Catalina Soler, accompanied the visiting young architects. During the visit, participants learned first-hand about the unique architectural features of the building, its historical, social, industrial, and construction context within the region, its integration into the surrounding environment, and its connection to nearby points of interest.

The rehabilitation of the former cooperative winery building in Felanitx, submitted as a proposal by the Government of the Balearic Islands in collaboration with the Consell de Mallorca and Felanitx City Council, is one of only nine selected sites in Spain for this edition and the only one in the Balearic Islands, among nearly fifty architectural projects proposed across different European countries.

Councillor Mateo remarked, “It is great news that, so far, thirty architectural teams have shown interest in this project and in this iconic building for the people of Mallorca. It is one of the top five projects generating the most interest across Europe.” He also encouraged participants who choose this project to “transform Es Sindicat into a cultural and social space, preserving the essence of what it once was.”

The visit included contributions from experts, including heritage technicians from the Consell de Mallorca, Dr. Júlia Roman, an art historian, and Bartomeu Salvà, an archaeologist and doctor in geography and history. They discussed the origin and evolution of the building, the historical importance of viticulture in the region, and key local sites, particularly emphasising the Felanitx Oenological Station.

Participants also heard testimonies from former cooperative winery workers, who shared the social significance Es Sindicat de Felanitx held during its years of operation.

Rehabilitation of Es Sindicat de Felanitx

The rehabilitation and restoration proposal for Es Sindicat, a benchmark for its typology, architectural style, and construction, seeks to give a new life to this emblematic building by turning it into a cultural and social space. The competition raises essential questions such as: Can a social symbol be reborn from its own foundations?

Built between 1919 and 1922, Es Sindicat de Felanitx, the former cooperative winery, is listed among the 100 elements of Spain’s Industrial Heritage, and has been declared a Cultural Heritage Site (BIC) by the Consell de Mallorca, with the status of monument.

The National Europan Committee approved the site in January, and participants can submit their proposals until June 29. The final decision by national and European juries will be announced in mid-November.
