The Ministry of Education and Universities, through the Teacher Training Service, is launching the “Inclusive Science in Action” program—an innovative educational initiative aimed at encouraging scientific vocations among socially vulnerable students in Palma.

This educational initiative is initially supported by the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). It forms part of the Educational Experience Program coordinated with the Teacher Training Centre (CEP) of Palma.

Education Launches “Inclusive Science in Action” Program to Bring Science Closer to Palma’s Most Vulnerable Students

The program targets students in 5th and 6th grade of primary school and 1st year of secondary school (ESO) from 10 publicly funded schools located in the Son Gotleu area. Its goal is to help children and adolescents discover science in a hands-on and participatory way, foster scientific competence and critical thinking, and build a collaborative educational network among schools.

The participating schools are: CEIP Es Pont, CEIP Joan Capó, CEIPIESO Gabriel Vallseca, CC Balmes, CC Sant Josep Obrer, CC Corpus Christi, CC La Miraculosa, IES Josep Sureda i Blanes, CC Sant Vicenç de Paül, and CCEE Mater Misericordiae. The science program has begun this year with initial activities and will be fully implemented during the 2025–2026 academic year.

At the same time, teachers from the participating schools will receive a 12-hour training course, organised by the Teacher Training Service and the CEP Palma, to provide them with tools to integrate science in a cross-disciplinary and meaningful way within the classroom.

The involvement of the AECC and UIB will materialise through scientific workshops and outreach sessions held in classrooms, offering students a real and professional view of the scientific world. This collaboration between education, research, and social engagement aims to open the doors of science to everyone, especially those who have traditionally had limited access.

In fact, students from the program will take part in the science fair organised by UIB and will also feature prominently in the upcoming “Fira de la Ciència al Carrer”, which will be held in the Son Gotleu neighbourhood.

With “Inclusive Science in Action,” the Ministry of Education is committed to an educational model that meets the needs of both present and future generations and brings science closer to students as a tool for social and personal transformation.
