Pre-alert Status Remains in 82% of Demand Units, with No Scenario Changes

April ended with water reserves in the Balearic Islands at 53%, one point higher than in March (52%) and the same level recorded a year ago (53%).

By island:

  • Mallorca rose from 53% to 54%,
  • Menorca remained stable at 51%,
  • Ibiza continued its upward trend, increasing from 39% to 40%.

The evolution of water reserves led to mixed changes in drought management scenarios. Five Demand Units (DUs) saw their indices decrease (Menorca, Artà, Manacor-Felanitx, North Tramuntana, and Formentera), two remained unchanged (Es Pla and Palma-Alcúdia), and three improved (Migjorn, South Tramuntana, and Ibiza).

Despite these variations, no scenario changes have occurred. The Tramuntana North, Tramuntana South, and Formentera DUs remain in a normal situation (17.6% of the territory), while the other eight DUs (Menorca, Artà, Manacor-Felanitx, Migjorn, Es Pla, Palma-Alcúdia, Ibiza, and Formentera) continue in a pre-alert scenario (82.4%).

At the regional level, the Hydrological Demarcation Index stands at 0.475, slightly higher than a year ago (0.455), but below the value recorded two years ago (0.555). This confirms that reserves remain below historical averages.

According to the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET), April was dry in the Balearic archipelago, with an average of 15.1 l/m² compared to the usual 41.3 l/m². By island:

  • Mallorca recorded 13.9 l/m² (historical average: 43.8 l/m²),
  • Menorca 28.4 l/m² (vs. 36.4 l/m²),
  • Ibiza 9.7 l/m² (vs. 32.5 l/m²),
  • Formentera 6.8 l/m² (vs. 23.2 l/m²).

The interannual precipitation rate in the Balearic Islands stands at 96% (Mallorca 97%, Menorca 99%, and the Pityusic Islands 91%).

As for temperatures, April was very warm, with an average temperature of 15.9 °C and a positive anomaly of 1.2 °C, which may have contributed to higher evaporation rates and hindered aquifer recharge.

Based on current forecasts, the time of year, and the low rainfall recorded, a decline in water reserves is expected in May.
