Balearic Islands Purchase 8,900 Doses of Antibody to Immunise Infants Under 6 Months Against Bronchiolitis

Nirsevimab will be administered to infants under six months of age starting this autumn, marking the third immunisation campaign in the Balearic public health system. The first campaign achieved 75% coverage of the target population, while the 2024–2025 campaign reached 84%.

Immunisation has led to a substantial reduction in severe cases of the disease, specifically, a 70% decrease in hospital admissions and an 80% reduction in pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) admissions.

RSV is the leading cause of bronchiolitis, an inflammation of the bronchi and bronchioles. It accounts for 80% of respiratory diseases and hospitalisations in children under one year old. The virus is also linked to bacterial respiratory infections and the later development of bronchial hyperreactivity and asthma.

It is estimated that 10% of children contract RSV, with 1–2% requiring hospitalisation. Of those hospitalised, 10% are admitted to the ICU. The disease tends to be more frequent and severe in premature infants or those with serious health conditions. However, because it is so widespread, most affected children are otherwise healthy.
