The project modernises the port infrastructure in the Menorcan town, adapting it to current needs and promoting nautical activity in the area
Ports de les Illes Balears (PortsIB), part of the Government of the Balearic Islands, has officially handed over the new docks in the port of Fornells to the five awarded companies that will now manage nearly 300 moorings within the facility. The event was attended by the Minister of the Sea and Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente; the Director General of Ports and Maritime Transport, Antoni Mercant; the Manager of PortsIB, Kiko Villalonga; and representatives from the awarded concessionaires.

PortsIB Hands Over New Docks in Fornells Harbour to Five Awarded Companies
The companies now managing the docks are: Marina Deportiva Menorca, Urbanización Cala’n Bosch S.L., Inversions Martí Riera S.L., Grup MSC Balears S.L.U., and Club Náutico Fornells—all of which are active in Menorca. This allocation continues a management model based on proximity and quality.
Minister Juan Manuel Lafuente emphasised the project’s importance in stimulating the local economy and nautical sector:
“This is a significant step forward for the port of Fornells and for the entire nautical sector in Menorca. We are committed to modern, high-quality, and environmentally respectful management, driven by local companies and aligned with the sustainability goals we envision for the ports of the Balearic Islands.”
The dock management contracts are the result of a public tender process launched earlier this year, which attracted thirteen bidders. Following a technical and economic evaluation of the proposals, the Evaluation Committee recommended awarding lots to the five highest-scoring companies. The contracts are valid for four years and include a commitment to providing quality services to users while promoting the use of electric, sailing, and traditional boats.
Complementary Environmental Actions
Alongside this project, PortsIB recently completed the restoration of Posidonia oceanica seagrass within the harbour of Fornells. The intervention has led to the recovery of 2,160 square meters of seabed through the planting of 3,200 rhizome fragments. The restoration was carried out by Tecnoambiente S.L. with scientific support from IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB). This initiative is part of the broader environmental measures accompanying the full renovation of the port.
With the planting phase completed, the monitoring stage now begins, allowing for ongoing assessment of the growth of the Posidonia and the overall environmental impact of the intervention.
The Government of the Balearic Islands reaffirms its commitment to promoting organised, safe, and environmentally responsible port activity, contributing to the sustainability and quality of the region’s harbours.
