The Director General of Tourism Supports the Pla de Mallorca Challenge and Champions Sports as a Driver of Cohesion and International Projection
During his speech, the Director General highlighted that “it is a true privilege to support a competition that, since 1984, has helped to strengthen the passion for cycling, foster local identity, and showcase the wonders of the Pla de Mallorca.” He also praised the quality of the infrastructure and the region’s potential as a top-tier European cycling tourism destination, thanks to its network of secondary roads, natural and cultural heritage, and specialised accommodation and services.
“Pla de Mallorca is the ideal place to disconnect, discover, and push yourself on two wheels,” he stated. “This comes from a proud Montuïri native who loves his hometown and region, and who also happens to be the Director General of a ministry led by another Montuïri native.” In this regard, he confirmed that both the ministry and the entire Government fully support this event, which boosts the local economy and promotes an image of Mallorca linked to sports, health, and sustainability.
The Director General emphasised that “sports mean much more than just health: they are social cohesion, economic revitalisation, and international projection.” He added that supporting sports means supporting our islands and our people.
The Challenge, scheduled for May 24 to June 1 in the municipalities of Lloret, Porreres, Costitx, and Algaida, will feature four competitive stages along with parallel events such as the School Challenge – Consell de Mallorca Grand Prix, aimed at young children. “They are the future of sports, and instilling values such as effort, discipline, and coexistence is key to building a better society,” said the Director General, strongly endorsing the integration of school competitions into the event.
Finally, he expressed sincere thanks to all involved parties: municipalities, the Pla Regional Council, the Consell de Mallorca, the Cycling Federation, sponsors, clubs, and volunteers. “Their work is often invisible, but it is essential for the success of events like this.”
The Government of the Balearic Islands will continue to support initiatives that show that “Mallorca is much more than sun and beach: it is also sport, culture, and a living land.”
