This Sunday, the Consell de Mallorca marked the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Tossals Verds mountain refuge in the Serra de Tramuntana, with a festive day filled with commemorative activities open to the public. Tossals Verds is the first mountain hostel to operate as part of the island’s official network of refuges managed by the Consell, which now includes seven hostels along the Dry Stone Route (GR-221).
Second Vice President and Minister of Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, Pedro Bestard, presided over the ceremony, accompanied by Escorca’s mayor Antoni Solivellas, Island Director of Environment Luis Rubí, and Environmental Services Head Josep Antoni Aguiló. The event was also attended by former and current refuge staff, along with a large group of hikers.

Tossals Verds Celebrates its 30th Anniversary as the First Mountain Hostel in Mallorca’s Official Refuge Network
To commemorate the anniversary, the Department of Environment organised a collective guided hike to the refuge, following part of variant D of the Dry Stone Route, from Castell d’Alaró to Tossals Verds, with around 70 hikers taking part.
The celebration featured a heartfelt tribute to retired staff members who worked at Tossals Verds over the past 30 years, including honours for Francisca Amengual Colomillo, the first cook of the refuge; Josep Munar, the first caretaker; and Antoni Colomar, promoter of the hostel.
During the event, Minister Bestard expressed his gratitude for the attendees’ participation and gave special thanks to those who contributed to the development of the refugee network. He stated:
“We began this journey 30 years ago with the opening of Tossals Verds, and today we are proud to say that this year we will surpass half a million overnight stays across Mallorca’s refuges. This is a great source of satisfaction that encourages us to continue working to protect and preserve the natural environment — one of the fundamental roles of these facilities.”
Later, Minister Bestard visited and inaugurated a photographic exhibition commemorating the 30th anniversary, installed in the refuge’s meeting room. The exhibition offers a retrospective journey from the refuge’s beginnings and will be open throughout the 2025 hiking season.
