The President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, awarded this distinction to Cristina Zaforteza, manager of Alfàbia, in recognition of her contribution to the conservation of the Serra de Tramuntana cultural landscape.

This morning, the President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, presented the first Serra de Tramuntana World Heritage Distinction to a possessió (traditional rural estate). Jardins d’Alfàbia thus becomes the first emblematic site in the Serra to receive this recognition, which honours its role in preserving the values and elements that led UNESCO to declare the Serra de Tramuntana a World Heritage Site in 2011, under the category of cultural landscape.

Jardins d’Alfàbia Becomes the First “Possessió” to Receive the Serra de Tramuntana World Heritage Distinction

The Distinction is an initiative by the Consell de Mallorca aimed at encouraging the consumption of products from the Serra de Tramuntana and supporting the local farmers whose work preserves its landscape. To date, fifteen agri-food businesses have received the distinction, along with seven additional service or non-food product companies that promote the values of the Serra.

Jardins d’Alfàbia has signed the first agreement targeted at emblematic sites in the Serra, marking a major boost to the Distinction initiative and helping to close the economic circle by opening new commercial channels for Serra products. As part of this commitment, Jardins d’Alfàbia has pledged to incorporate Distinction-certified products into the public events it organises on the estate.

During the ceremony, President Llorenç Galmés presented the Distinction plaque to Cristina Zaforteza, manager of Jardins d’Alfàbia. The event was also attended by the Minister of the Presidency, Antoni Fuster; the Serra de Tramuntana Island Director, Antoni Solivellas; the Manager of the Consortium, Lluís Vallcaneras; and the Mayor of Bunyola, Marian Serralta.

President Galmés stated:
“The work carried out by the Zaforteza family to preserve this iconic estate is a benchmark. We are truly pleased that they are the first to receive the Distinction, and we hope this will inspire other estates to join the initiative and help consolidate a network of culturally and historically valuable sites that also strengthen the local economy.”

Located at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana in the municipality of Bunyola, the Alfàbia estate dates back to the 13th century, during the period of Arab rule under Ben-Abet. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful locations on the island of Mallorca, and has been declared a site of cultural interest (Bien de Interés Cultural). Visitors enter through a courtyard featuring a central spring and a towering banana tree. Over the centuries, elements from different periods have been added in harmony, making Alfàbia a living example of respect for heritage, conservation, evolution, and innovation. The estate is also home to livestock, including pigs, goats, peacocks, and other birds.
