The Consell Insular de Mallorca has today unanimously approved a joint motion by all political groups to honor the memory of Pep Campaner, a Mallorcan activist committed to the fight against noma, an infectious disease that primarily affects children living in extreme malnutrition.
The declaration, promoted by the Campaner Foundation, urges the United Nations General Assembly to designate December 3 as the International Day Against Noma, in memory of Pep Campaner’s passing on December 3, 2023.
The initiative has received wide support in Mallorca, both institutionally and socially, and represents a significant step toward raising awareness about this neglected disease and the Mallorcan people’s spirit of solidarity.

The Consell de Mallorca Approves Joint Motion to Commemorate the Life of Pep Campaner and Promote the International Day Against Noma
Pep Campaner devoted his life to denouncing the devastating effects of noma and defending the rights of affected children in sub-Saharan Africa through the Campaner Foundation, which he founded. His humanitarian and philanthropic legacy has been recognised by numerous social organisations and public institutions around the world.
The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, stated: “Pep Campaner was a model of commitment and solidarity that transcends borders. His legacy reminds us that the fight against disease and poverty is a shared responsibility we cannot ignore. At the Consell, we are committed to keeping his memory alive and working for a future where no one—especially no child—suffers from noma.”
In the words of the president of the Campaner Foundation, Miquel Ensenyat: “The disease known as noma was officially recognized by the WHO in 2023, when Josep Campaner had already been fighting it for over 30 years. His work focused mainly on the prevention and eradication of this terrible disease, which is not contagious and can be treated with a simple dose of penicillin. This small tribute we wish to pay to Josep Campaner and his life of struggle must ultimately lead to the UN declaring December 3 as the International Day Against Noma.”
The joint motion will be forwarded to the Parliament of the Balearic Islands, the Spanish Congress of Deputies, the Senate, the European Parliament, and the World Health Organisation (WHO), to have the proposal formally considered and adopted at the international level.
