The Tourism Department of the Consell de Mallorca, following the signing of an agreement with the Cabildo General of Mallorca, will develop an augmented reality (AR) application centred on the Cathedral of Mallorca.
This initiative is part of the broader project “Digitised Mallorca and Augmented Reality,” which involves the design and development of up to 41 tourist resources in augmented or virtual reality. The project is included in the 2022 “Tourism Sustainability in Destinations Plan,” funded with European funds and endowed with a total budget of €600,000.
The project is structured around two main actions. Firstly, an interactive website will be developed to showcase the 41 selected resources chosen by the Consell de Mallorca. These include, in addition to the Cathedral, various monuments, iconic buildings, natural parks, and geographic landmarks of interest. Multimedia materials are being prepared to enable each of these resources to be viewed online.

The Consell de Mallorca to Develop an Augmented Reality App Featuring the Cathedral of Mallorca
Secondly, an augmented reality app will be created, incorporating 8 of the 41 selected locations, including the Cathedral of Mallorca. The remaining locations—pending formal agreements—include: Bellver Castle, Capdepera Castle, the Sanctuary of Sant Salvador, the Church of Sant Francesc de Paula, the Parish of Sant Miquel, Sa Pagesa and the Santa Margalida Spring, the Cloister of Sant Domingo, and the Church of Sant Llorenç.
President Llorenç Galmés stated that this represents a “firm step toward innovation and digitalisation through the development of this augmented reality app, as we aim to transform the tourist experience and make it more immersive, accessible, and technology-driven.” Galmés added, “These are monuments we all know, but thanks to this technology, they can now be rediscovered with a new perspective.”
“Digitized Mallorca and Augmented Reality” is one of five projects commissioned by the Consell de Mallorca to the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) for a total of €1.5 million, as part of its strategy to promote “tourism policies in favor of coexistence,” according to Tourism Minister José Marcial Rodríguez. The initiative is led by the UIB’s audiovisual lab, under the direction of Professor Juan Montes de Oca, whose mission is to bring augmented reality technology to Mallorca’s tourism offering.
In addition to the app, technological audiovisual content will be created to highlight iconic locations on the island, such as La Lonja, the Sa Bassa Blanca Museum, the courtyards of Palma’s noble mansions, the Son Real necropolis, and the mills at the public estate of Galatzó.
All materials will be available in Spanish, Catalan, English, German, and sign language, and will be freely accessible through the official website of the Consell de Mallorca. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2026.
