The Government Approves a €51,840 Grant for the 54th Opera Season in Menorca

This grant, processed by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sports, aims to preserve and promote a musical tradition with more than two centuries of history in Menorca.

The Fundació Menorquina de l’Òpera, a non-profit organisation founded in 2006, annually organises the opera season at the Teatre Principal de Maó, considered the oldest opera house in Spain. Its cultural activities are regarded as a key component of the intangible cultural heritage of the Balearic Islands.

The 2025 season includes, among other events, a performance of Verdi’s opera Aida, as well as initiatives such as an educational conference by Ramon Gener, the programs “Òpera Prima” aimed at young audiences, “Òpera Gran” for older adults, and a free open-air screening of the opening performance.

The grant has been awarded under Article 7.1(c) of the Revised Text of the Subsidies Act, due to the unique nature of the activity and the absence of alternative entities capable of carrying it out. The proposal also highlights the social, cultural, and historical significance of Menorca’s opera season, as well as the value of its musical archive, which is considered one of the most important in the world for original 19th-century opera scores.

Through this initiative, the Government reaffirms its commitment to protecting and promoting the intangible cultural heritage of the Balearic Islands.
