The program allows children from the Algerian province of Tindouf to spend the summer months with Spanish host families under a temporary foster care arrangement.
The Council of Ministers, at the proposal of the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, has approved the necessary instructions to authorize the temporary residence of Sahrawi minors and the granting of short-stay visas for the monitors who will accompany them during their three-month stay in Spain, as part of the “Vacations in Peace 2025” program.
The “Vacations in Peace” program aims to provide temporary foster care for minors from the Sahrawi refugee camps located in the Algerian province of Tindouf. From 2014 to 2024, nearly 34,500 Sahrawi children have benefited from this initiative, which became fully established in the mid-1990s. This summer, approximately 3,000 minors will take part in the program.

Around 3,000 Children from Sahrawi Refugee Camps Will Arrive in Spain This Summer Through the “Vacations in Peace 2025” Program
As part of Spain’s ongoing solidarity with the Sahrawi refugee population, the “Vacations in Peace” program has been held annually, only interrupted for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Each year, it allows thousands of children to enjoy a summer holiday in Spain, from late June to early September, after which they return to their communities of origin.
The program is coordinated by various associations of Friends of the Sahrawi People, the National Sahrawi Delegation, and regional Sahrawi delegations across Spain’s Autonomous Communities.
In addition to civil society organisations, the program involves multiple government departments, including the Ministries of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration; Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation; Interior; and Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, as well as the regional governments that will host the children.
Over the past ten years, the Autonomous Communities of Andalusia, Catalonia, Castilla-La Mancha, the Basque Country, and Galicia have been the main destinations for Sahrawi children participating in the program.
