The presentation, attended by President Galmés, took place just days after the Plenary Session unanimously approved a joint motion to commemorate the figure of Campaner and urge the United Nations to declare December 3rd as the International Day Against Noma.

The plenary hall of the Consell de Mallorca was the venue today for the presentation of the book “Josep Campaner, la lluita contra el noma”, written by Miquel Sbert. The book reflects on the life and humanitarian work of Pep Campaner, founder of the Campaner Foundation and a leading figure in the fight against this infectious disease, which primarily affects children suffering from extreme malnutrition.

The event was attended by the President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, and various councillors of the island institution, as well as representatives from the Campaner Foundation, including the Foundation’s President, Miquel Ensenyat, Vice President and co-founder Marilena Navarro, and the author, Miquel Sbert.

Through this event, the Consell de Mallorca aimed to pay tribute to Campaner’s tireless efforts, who for decades denounced the devastating effects of noma and actively worked to save the lives of hundreds of children in sub-Saharan Africa.

President Galmés stated: “Today we pay tribute to a man who made solidarity a way of life. His legacy reminds us that the fight against disease and poverty is a collective responsibility that we cannot ignore, and from the Consell de Mallorca, we are committed to ensuring that his memory and fight continue.”

The presentation took place just a few days after the Plenary Session of the Consell unanimously approved a joint motion to honour Pep Campaner and to urge the United Nations to declare December 3rd as the International Day Against Noma, coinciding with the date of his passing, December 3rd, 2023.

The proposal, which will be forwarded to the Parliament of the Balearic Islands, the Spanish Congress of Deputies, the Senate, the European Parliament, and the World Health Organization (WHO), represents a strong step toward raising awareness of the disease, intending to have the proposal formally assessed and adopted at the international level.
