Last night, the Teatre Principal in Palma premiered Don Pasquale by Gaetano Donizetti, the opera that concludes the 39th Opera Season. The production will also be performed on Friday, June 20 at 8:00 PM, and Sunday, June 22 at 6:00 PM. The audience filled the Sala Gran and warmly received the staging by Pier Francesco Maestrini and the musical direction by Roberto Rizzi-Brignoli, as shown by a long round of applause at the end of the performance.

The evening also featured a touching moment: a tribute to Mrs. Maria del Carme Capó, a devoted subscriber to the Opera Season who, at 96 years old (she will turn 97 in July), never misses a single opera title. Before the performance, Toni Fuster, Minister of the Presidency, and Guillem Ginard, Island Director of Culture, representing the Consell de Mallorca, together with the theatre’s managing director Miquel Martorell, presented Maria del Carme Capó with a bouquet and expressed their gratitude for her loyalty to the Teatre Principal’s Opera Season.

A Full House at the Teatre Principal for the Premiere of Don Pasquale by Donizetti

Don Pasquale is one of the most acclaimed comic operas in the repertoire. It is a romantic farce in which Don Pasquale wishes to marry his nephew to a wealthy woman, while the young man wants to marry his beloved Norina, who is young and poor.

The cast includes baritone Pablo Ruiz (Don Pasquale), baritone Milan Perisic (Doctor Malatesta), tenor Juan de Dios Mateos (Ernesto), soprano Verónica Granatiero (Norina), and bass Joan Miquel Muñoz (Carlotto). They are joined by the Teatre Principal Choir, conducted by Francesc Bonnín, and the Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra. The artistic team also includes Andrea Borelli (lighting), Juan Guillermo Nova (set design), Luca Dall’Alpi (costume design), and Michele Consentino (choreographer and assistant director).

With Don Pasquale — which will be performed again on Friday, June 20 at 8:00 PM and Sunday, June 22 at 6:00 PM — the 39th Opera Season comes to a close. The season began in October with Turandot by Puccini (October 21, 23, 25), continued in February with Dido and Aeneas by Purcell (February 12, 14, 16), and featured the Easter Concert dedicated to Messe Solennelle de Sainte Cécile by Gounod, held on April 12.
