Mallorca Fire Department Issues Safety Recommendations for the Night of Sant Joan

Regarding correfocs, Bonnín highlights two key aspects: participant protection and community safety.

“We recommend first and foremost protecting yourself from sparks: wear long clothing, long sleeves, or a hood. Cotton clothing is preferable; synthetic or flammable materials should be avoided. It’s also important to wear closed shoes—flip-flops should never be worn in a correfoc,” he said.

For residents in towns hosting correfocs, it’s important to remember:

“Windows and shutters should be closed along the route. It’s crucial—there have been cases where sparks entered homes, causing minor scares, small fires, or at least a fire start.”

As for bonfires, the Fire Department advises that they must:

  • Be authorised by the local municipality
  • Maintain a minimum safety distance of 10–15 meters from homes, windows, doors, and especially vehicles

“Bonfires should never be set up in front of parked cars, motorcycles, or scooters,” Bonnín stressed.
“We also recommend placing sand or soil under the fire to contain it and prevent it from spreading to nearby areas.”

When it comes to pyrotechnics, the Fire Chief warns:

“Never carry firecrackers in your pockets. They should always be transported in a box or bag.
Do not use firecrackers in crowded areas, forested zones, or dry fields. Temperatures are high and vegetation is extremely dry, increasing the risk of wildfire.”

Lastly, regarding fireworks and rockets, Bonnín recommends:

“Avoid launching them in wooded or dry grassy areas. If possible, use open spaces that are at least 500 meters away from forested areas.
And always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, as improper use can lead to accidents or rockets going off in unintended directions.”

The Mallorca Fire Department urges everyone to act with caution and responsibility to ensure a safe and enjoyable Sant Joan for all.
