The expansion of places within the International Protection Reception System (SAPI) ensures coverage of the basic needs of people seeking asylum in Spain. It guarantees dignified treatment and support until their full integration into society.
Over the past ten years, the Government of Spain, through the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, has added approximately 32,000 reception places to the SAPI system. This system includes everything from basic care to full integration in the host society.

Spain Adds 32,000 Reception Places in 10 Years to Support Asylum Seekers — A Model of International Solidarity
The “Report on the International Protection System in Spain”, published by the State Secretariat for Migration to mark World Refugee Day, analyses in depth the context and data of a system that has enhanced its response capacity after each humanitarian crisis.
SAPI covers basic needs for asylum seekers and beneficiaries of international and temporary protection who lack economic resources. It also provides individualised integration paths. Currently, nearly 34,000 people are supported daily within the system.
From 1,920 places in 2015, the system grew to 34,062 by June 2025, representing an increase of 32,142 places, including assessment, referral, and accommodation phases.
📈 Asylum Application Trends
Irregular arrivals by sea totalled 15,875 people from January to June 15, 2025 — a 31.1% decrease compared to the same period in 2024.
Spain received a record 163,220 asylum applications in 2023, a 37% increase over 2022. Applications continued to rise in 2024 (up 2.5%) and reached 64,638 by June 2025, mainly from Venezuelans, Colombians, and Peruvians.
Spain is the fourth EU country in the number of temporary protection beneficiaries, hosting over 244,000 Ukrainian nationals.
