The Consell de Mallorca and Ecovidrio—a non-profit organisation responsible for glass packaging recycling in Spain—have launched the Net Green Homes initiative, aimed at promoting a network of environmentally responsible vacation rentals (ETV) on the island, committed to proper waste management and recycling.
Net Green Homes is a platform active in both Mallorca and Ibiza, encouraging environmental care through simple, effective practices such as glass recycling. The municipalities of Santanyí, Alcúdia, and Pollença have joined the campaign, as they are among the areas with the highest concentration of holiday rentals in Mallorca.
The presentation event was attended by the Minister of Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, Pedro Bestard; the island director of waste management, Margalida Roig; Ecovidrio’s regional coordinator for the Balearic Islands, Ivan Tolsà; Sebastià Sansó, manager of EMSER Pollença; and Francisco Javier Rodríguez, Councillor for the Environment of Alcúdia.

Consell de Mallorca and Ecovidrio Launch the “Net Green Homes” Initiative to Promote a Network of Eco-Conscious Holiday Rentals
Vice President and Minister Bestard stated that “being part of this network—endorsed by several municipalities—adds value to vacation rentals by aligning with current waste management regulations.”
“This innovative campaign enables everyone to contribute to proper waste disposal and, in doing so, helps protect our island’s natural environment. It’s a model of good practices that encourages tourists to recycle,” he added.
Promoting Eco-Friendly Practices
By joining the network, hosts commit to informing their guests that the property participates in glass recycling efforts, providing recycling bins and clear information on how to properly separate waste, including the location of nearby containers or local door-to-door collection schedules.
Additionally, accommodations must display visible signage on optimising water and energy use and actively promote the Net Green Homes campaign through their websites, social media, or email communications to encourage others to join the initiative.
Environmental Benefits of Glass Recycling
Minister Bestard highlighted that “100% of the glass deposited in recycling bins is recycled and used to produce new glass containers, indefinitely, without losing its original properties. Glass recycling also helps prevent landfill overuse.”
By using cullet—recycled glass—in manufacturing, the extraction of raw materials is reduced, helping to prevent soil erosion, deforestation, and saving energy.
