held on July 7 and 8 in the Tunisian city of Kairouan. The event was organised by the Mallorcan Fund for Solidarity and Cooperation, in collaboration with the Centre for International Development and Innovative Local Governance (CILG), the National Federation of Tunisian Municipalities, and various civil society organisations.

Ana Ferriol, Island Director of Families of the Consell de Mallorca, represented the island institution and took part in both the opening and closing sessions. In her speeches, she shared the Consell’s experience in managing social services, implementing equality policies, and responding to gender-based violence, as well as the challenges related to water scarcity, which also affect the island of Mallorca.

The conference brought together institutional representatives from Tunisia and Mallorca, social organisations, and female mayors from both territories to reflect on the need for more inclusive local governance in the face of water challenges, climate change, and inequality. The Mallorcan mayors, participants in the “Les Elegides” program, shared good practices in female leadership and public management.

The Mallorcan Fund for Cooperation has been working in Tunisia for several years, with a strong presence in Kairouan. Since 2016, it has promoted projects to strengthen local democracy, advance equality, and ensure universal access to safe drinking water, particularly in vulnerable neighbourhoods and rural areas. Through the creation of spaces for citizen participation, training of community leaders, and development of local diagnostics, the Fund supports sustainable, locally rooted transformation.

With this institutional visit, the Consell de Mallorca reaffirms its commitment to international cooperation and collaborative work among communities in addressing global challenges, such as environmental justice, equal rights, and promoting more inclusive and equitable development.

This year, the Consell de Mallorca has allocated €1,570,000 to the Fund. This budget, approved in December 2024, allows the organisation to continue its international cooperation projects, emergency actions, awareness-raising activities, and other initiatives. An additional €140,000 from the 2024 surplus has been allocated to support countries in fragile situations, such as Afghanistan and Ukraine, where the Fund lacks sufficient resources to operate effectively.
