Jorge Diezma, curated by Cristina Anglada, takes part in Artesantander with the project “Suspended Landscapes: Marine Still Lifes”

The director of the IEB, Llorenç Perelló, attended the opening ceremony of the 33rd edition of the fair.

Once again, the Balearic Institute of Studies (IEB) is participating in the 33rd edition of Artesantander, the second longest-running contemporary art fair in Spain, held this year from July 11 to 15. The event will bring together more than forty national and international galleries at the Santander Exhibition and Congress Palace.

The IEB and Artesantander have established a collaboration agreement to present a solo exhibition by a Balearic artist at one of the fair’s booths. As part of this agreement, the IEB launched an open call to select an exhibition project.

“Suspended Landscapes: Marine Still Lifes” by Jorge Diezma, curated by Cristina Anglada, was the winning project of the open call to host a solo show by a Balearic artist at the IEB’s booth in Artesantander 2025.

The project revisits and reinterprets a historical Baroque subgenre: the marine still life, which originated in 17th-century Italy. Featuring fish and objects associated with the maritime world, these still lifes not only pay tribute to this tradition but also offer a critical reflection on the processes of transmission, vulgarisation, and re-appropriation of pictorial language through the centuries.

Previous projects by Balearic artists presented at the fair include “La marca visible” (2017), a group exhibition focused on drawing featuring Mònica Fuster, Albert Piña, Cristòfor Pons, Isabel Servera, Cruz Ugarte, and Damià Vives; “Salvavidas” by Amparo Sard (2019); and “Landscape with Horse” by Catalina Julve (2024).

IEB Director Llorenç Perelló, who attended the opening of Artesantander 2025, stated that “the participation of Jorge Diezma, curated by Cristina Anglada and supported once again by the IEB at Artesantander, is a tremendous opportunity to give visibility to the work of Balearic artists.”
