The Balearic Institute of Studies (IEB) Grants €325,000 in Funding to Promote the Use of Catalan

A key new feature of this year’s call is the division of funding into two lines, with a total budget of €325,000. Of this amount, €310,000 has been allocated to Line A and €15,000 to Line B.

Line A is aimed at local authorities and non-profit private entities that submit projects for the promotion and dissemination of Catalan, such as language support activities, linguistic and cultural training, recreational and awareness-raising activities, and initiatives targeting specific population groups. This year, 48 beneficiaries have been awarded funding under this line, including 27 municipalities and the rest non-profit private entities.

This line also includes recreational activities, programs, and projects that aim to promote the use of Catalan in areas where its presence is limited—for example, creating competitive products in Catalan that apply new technologies, expanding the offering of films in Catalan, Catalan-language film forums, board games, and other recreational resources.

Line B addresses the aim of promoting the presence of Catalan on social media. This funding supports the production and dissemination of a minimum of ten Catalan-language videos on social media with a coherent thematic line and style. This line targets individuals residing in the Balearic Islands or groups of individuals without legal personality. In 2025, three beneficiaries have been awarded under Line B.

Regarding execution timelines, activities under Line A must be carried out between January 1 and December 31, 2025. For Line B, the videos must be created and published between the date of the funding resolution’s publication and May 31, 2026.

Another new feature this year is the consideration of commemorative events, such as the “Year of Josep Maria Llompart” and the 50th anniversary of the publication of Te deix, amor, la mar com a penyora, by Carme Riera.

Project evaluations for Line A were based on criteria such as social use of Catalan, impact, innovation, and commemorations. For Line B, factors such as content, linguistic quality, dissemination plan, and the creators’ previous track record were assessed.

The director of the IEB, Llorenç Perelló, stated that “with these grants, the IEB exercises its responsibilities for promoting the Catalan language, as granted to the Balearic Islands by the Statute of Autonomy.” He also emphasized that “it is essential for Catalan to have a strong presence on social media to ensure its survival and intergenerational transmission.”
