The island institution has funded the purchase of three sound level meters by the Tramuntana Intermunicipal Association to enhance control over noise pollution.
The Consell de Mallorca has launched three portable sound level meters funded through a grant of €23,798 awarded to the Mancomunitat de la Serra de Tramuntana. This initiative is part of a new line of funding created this year for the first time, specifically for the island’s intermunicipal associations. These devices will enable the measurement of noise levels in urban centres of the member municipalities and reinforce the work of local police in controlling acoustic pollution.
This was explained by the President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, during the official handover event held in Bunyola. The event was also attended by the president of the Mancomunitat, Bernat Isern, mayors from the participating municipalities, and representatives of the Plataforma Indignats MA-10.

Sound Level Meters Funded by the Consell de Mallorca Deployed to Monitor Noise in Urban Areas of the Serra de Tramuntana
Also present were the Councillor for Economic Promotion and Local Development, Pilar Amate; the Councillor for Territory, Mobility, and Infrastructure, Fernando Rubio; and the Councillor for the Presidency, Toni Fuster.
The sound level meters, which can be shared among various municipalities depending on local needs, are designed to support the efforts of local police forces. The goal is to enable them to act, measure noise pollution, and issue fines in cases where local noise ordinances are violated. Their use is limited to urban areas, where municipalities have sanctioning authority. In the rest of the road network, jurisdiction lies with the Dirección General de Tráfico (Spanish Traffic Authority).
President Galmés emphasized that “the island institution has not turned a blind eye to this problem, which causes discomfort among residents of the affected towns and disrupts community life.” He added that the Consell acts within its jurisdiction to provide municipalities with the necessary tools to intervene in urban environments.
The acquisition of the sound level meters complements recent regulatory work, including the approval of a municipal noise ordinance promoted jointly by the Consell, the Federation of Local Entities of the Balearic Islands (FELIB), and the Mancomunitat. This ordinance has already been adopted by the municipalities in the area and establishes a common legal framework for sanctioning excessive noise emissions in urban spaces.
