The Balearic Government to Invest Over 6 Million Euros in the Comprehensive Renovation of Formentera’s Wastewater Treatment Plant

The presentation was attended by the President of the Consell Insular of Formentera, Óscar Portas; the Minister for the Environment, Verónica Castelló; the Minister for Infrastructure, Javier Serra; and MP Llorenç Córdoba. Also present were Joan Calafat, Director General of Water Resources, and Emeterio Moles, Manager of the Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency (ABAQUA).

The project, already tendered, is currently in the awarding phase. Construction is scheduled to begin once the 2025 tourist season ends and will last 20 months. To minimise environmental impact, there will be a temporary halt in works during May and June, coinciding with the nesting period of protected species.

According to Minister Lafuente, “this intervention represents an essential update to improve treatment processes and effluent quality. Renovating an infrastructure that has been operating for more than two decades is key to ensuring optimal and sustainable performance.” He added, “We are equipping Formentera with a modern, efficient facility fully adapted to the environmental challenges of the future.”

With this renovation, the plant’s treatment capacity will be expanded to 4,000 cubic meters per day and will integrate advanced technological systems to enhance process efficiency and the quality of treated water.

Key actions include the construction of a new advanced pre-treatment system, refurbishment of the tanker truck reception area, waterproofing of the secondary clarifiers, and the addition of a third clarifier. The entire sludge management system will be renewed, and the control building will be refurbished to incorporate a real-time automated monitoring system.

Of the total budget, 5.86 million euros will go toward the main construction works, while the remaining funds will cover project management, safety and health coordination, and environmental monitoring.

With this initiative, the Government of the Balearic Islands reaffirms its commitment to the responsible and sustainable management of water resources, promoting the modernisation of infrastructures to ensure a high-quality, efficient, and environmentally respectful service prepared to face future environmental challenges.
