President Vicent Marí warns that this measure contradicts the tourism containment policies promoted by the Consell, which have enabled the elimination of nearly 10,000 illegal tourist accommodations in one year.

The president of the Island Council of Ibiza, Vicent Marí, has formally requested in a letter to the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, and the Minister of Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu, to withdraw the resolution that allows the tourist rental of private recreational boats — listed under the so-called “seventh list” — without the controls or requirements imposed on the professional nautical charter sector.

Marí, who expressed the institution’s outright opposition to this measure, denounced that it was adopted without any dialogue with the affected territories and represents a serious setback in the fight against tourist overcrowding in Ibiza. “It is an incoherent and disloyal measure considering the efforts we are making in Ibiza to bring order and ensure sustainability,” stated the president.

The Consell of Ibiza calls on the Government of Spain to withdraw the regulation allowing tourist rentals of private boats

In his letter to the ministers, the president recalled that Ibiza has become a benchmark in the fight against illegal activity and uncontrolled growth, after a year in which nearly 10,000 illegal tourist accommodations were eliminated thanks to a coordinated strategy with the island’s municipalities and the Balearic Government, based on inspections, technology, and effective enforcement of penalties. “We cannot now open a new avenue of tourist pressure via the sea, outside any planning or carrying capacity,” Marí emphasised.

The president thus calls for the state resolution to be withdrawn and for any future regulation of nautical rentals to have the consensus of the regional and island administrations, warning of the danger of endorsing an unregulated activity that contradicts the basic principles of responsible tourism.

This request complies with the resolution passed at the last General Policy plenary session of the Consell of Ibiza, held on July 17 and presented by the Popular Party group, which urged the Government of Spain to withdraw its project to legalize the rental of private recreational boats.
