The joint work between the Bishopric and the island’s institution has also made possible the conservation of two monuments in the Part Forana: the Virgin’s bier of Sant Bartomeu parish in Capdepera and that of Sant Cristòfol parish in Biniali.

The Virgin’s bier of Sant Jaume parish in Palma, one of Mallorca’s most emblematic works by artist Adrià Ferran, has been restored following a complex process carried out through collaboration between the Bishopric and the island’s cultural authorities. In addition, conservation work on the biers of Capdepera and Biniali parishes has also been completed.

The presentation of the three restorations took place today at Sant Jaume parish, attended by Vice President and Minister of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca; Episcopal Vicar for Historical and Cultural Heritage, Francesc Vicens; and the restoration team from Xicaranda.

Antònia Roca emphasised the importance of these joint efforts: “The restoration of the Virgin’s bier of Sant Jaume is a heritage milestone that connects us with our identity and our deepest traditions. It is an emblematic work that deserved to be recovered with rigour and respect.”

The work was carried out in phases starting in 2023, with preliminary studies, diagnostics, and various interventions on the monumental ensemble. The restoration included both sculptural elements and textiles, and has also led to the drafting of preventive conservation protocols to ensure its long-term preservation.

In Empire style, the Sant Jaume bier was created in 1815 by Adrià Ferran, a renovator of religious sculptural language in Mallorca who moved beyond Baroque exuberance to bring classical elegance to devotional imagery.

Meanwhile, the Virgin’s biers of Capdepera and Biniali parishes were also restored, both affected by woodworm and liturgical wear. These interventions, carried out by specialised teams, have restored two works of significant devotional and artistic value.

In 2025 alone, a total of €955,000 has been allocated to 22 heritage conservation projects in 15 municipalities across the island, reaffirming the institutions’ commitment to preserving Mallorca’s historical and cultural legacy.
