The Balearic emergency contingent, made up of 46 professionals and 21 vehicles, is returning to the Islands after fulfilling its mission in the recent wildfires in Castilla y León. The decision to withdraw comes once the assigned areas in León province are stabilised, in line with the initial operational plan.

The mission was launched quickly: the official request for support arrived on 17 August, and within less than 48 hours, the Balearic team was already deployed on the ground. Their operations focused on protecting local communities, containing hotspots, and preventing re-ignitions in affected areas such as Villarubín, Gestoso, and Anllares. Despite facing extreme conditions and communication difficulties —partially solved thanks to a mobile telecom station— the teams carried out their tasks with determination and professionalism.

Medical staff also assisted several individuals with eye irritation caused by ash. Over the following days, light and heavy sections worked side by side until the final day of operations.

The heavy vehicles began their return journey on Saturday evening, while the rest of the contingent is scheduled to leave on Sunday. Arrivals to Mallorca, Ibiza, and Menorca are expected between late Sunday night and early Monday morning.

Pablo Gárriz, Director General for Emergencies and Interior, underlined that “the Balearic contingent has done everything within its reach to help in an emergency of great magnitude, showing commitment and professionalism, while ensuring the safety of Balearic citizens at all times.”

The deployment included representatives from the Directorate-General for Emergencies and Interior, the fire brigades of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Palma, environmental officers, IBANAT staff, telecom technicians from Sampol, SAMU061 medical teams, and Civil Protection volunteers from several municipalities.
