The technology has been installed in the Sa Barralina car park (Ses Covetes), and work is underway to complete the installation in Na Tirapel.

This measure is part of the Government’s commitment to managing natural spaces with real-time data and communications, enabling better redirection of visitor flows.

The Balearic Agency for Digitalisation, Cybersecurity and Telecommunications (IB Digital), which depends on the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Innovation, has completed the installation of cameras to measure occupancy in the Sa Barralina car park (Ses Covetes), located in the Es Trenc-Salobrar de Campos Maritime-Terrestrial Natural Park. Work is also underway to complete the installation of sensors in the Na Tirapel car park, located within the same natural area.

The Government installs cameras to measure parking occupancy in the Es Trenc Natural Park

This is one of the six projects within the “Smart Balearic Territory” strategy, launched by the Government through the IoTIB Lab, a testing and knowledge hub where useful, reliable, and sustainable technological solutions are analysed and validated, in collaboration with the University of the Balearic Islands.

It is worth remembering that on June 28, the installation of sensors also began to monitor parking occupancy in the Mondragó Natural Park, specifically in the S’Amarador and Ses Fonts de n’Alís car parks.

“Car parks in natural areas do not have designated spaces, and vegetation, lack of mobile coverage, and the impossibility of using conventional electricity make it necessary to develop very precise and adapted solutions,” explains IB Digital’s manager, Miquel Cardona. “We want the territory to speak to us through sensors, so we can know what is happening, anticipate what will happen, and act in advance, making the best possible decisions,” he adds.

The technology used in the case of Ses Covetes consists of two different types of cameras that count the cars entering and leaving the car park, using different models and image processing methods.

This pilot project aims to preserve protected environments by preventing excessive vehicle pressure, improving both environmental conservation and visitor experience. “This is an opportunity for the Balearic Islands to become a European benchmark in how technology can care for the environment, enhance tourism, and empower people with decision-making,” says Cardona.
