The call to transform public spaces into more resilient environments against climate change is endowed with €2 million

This initiative will support the design, construction, and maintenance of sustainable infrastructure in municipalities across the Balearic Islands.

The Balearic Government has authorised an advance payment of 80% of the aid, without requiring guarantees, for the design of climate shelters — public spaces that provide thermal comfort and contribute to urban resilience. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Business, Self-Employment and Energy, will enable public entities to develop projects to adapt to climate change in their municipalities.

The total budget amounts to €2 million, of which €1.6 million will be executed in 2026 and the remaining €400,000 in 2027. Investments may exceed €300,000 and will focus on the design or improvement of municipal networks of climate shelters, both in outdoor and indoor spaces.

The objective is to encourage the drafting and implementation of projects that strengthen urban resilience, while integrating adaptation and mitigation strategies to address climate change. At the same time, the initiative is expected to generate a positive impact on economic activity linked to the design, construction, and maintenance of public spaces, in line with the upcoming Energy Transition and Climate Change Plan of the Balearic Islands.

This measure reinforces public policies on climate adaptation, in accordance with the Climate Change and Energy Transition Law, and is also aligned with the Regional Innovation Strategy (RIS3), which aims to consolidate the Balearic Islands as a sustainable tourist destination and a region with a high quality of life.
