The Serra de Tramuntana World Heritage Photography Contest, organised by the Serra de Tramuntana Consortium in collaboration with the Balearic Islands Nature Photography Association (AFONIB), celebrates its seventh edition this year with a total prize fund of €5,700.

The contest aims to promote the values that led to the declaration of the Serra de Tramuntana as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. For this edition, the categories have been better defined to reflect the key heritage elements. The four categories are:

  • Products and producers with the Distinctive Seal represent those who keep the landscape alive through their daily work.
  • Dry stone constructions, walls, and terraces.
  • The world of water covers the elements of traditional hydraulic systems.
  • Experiences in the Serra de Tramuntana, such as hiking or cultural routes.

One of this year’s innovations is that the Distinctive Seal map will be used as a reference for photography locations instead of the official UNESCO delimitation map. According to Antoni Solivellas, the Serra de Tramuntana island director, “this change is important because we don’t want to exclude producers with the Seal, who are key to preserving the cultural landscape we enjoy.”

In addition, submitted photographs must have been taken after January 1, 2023. Digital processing will be restricted to ensure images remain close to human vision, and AI-generated photos are explicitly prohibited.

The contest is open to both amateur and professional photographers who are the authors and rights holders of the submitted works. Each category includes a first prize of €800 and two honourable mentions of €400 and €200. One of the twelve winners will also have the chance to receive a special public award of €100 through a social media vote.

Participation is free of charge. The entry period runs from September 26 to October 9 via an online form. Each participant may submit up to six photographs in total, with a maximum of three per category. Every photo must include a caption or description without mentioning the author’s name.

The jury will be chaired by Lluís Vallcaneras, manager of the Serra de Tramuntana Consortium, with Antoni Solivellas as vice-chair, and will also include journalist and cultural guide Joan Carles Palos, cultural heritage researcher Tomeu Bonet, and AFONIB photographers Néstor Carda and Francesc Xavier Mas.

The winners will be announced during the last week of October. Awarded photographs will be showcased in a traveling exhibition across several municipalities of Mallorca and featured in the annual Serra de Tramuntana Consortium calendar.
