A staged traffic accident involving a car with a child secured in a rear-facing seat, and a school bus with an engine fire was carried out this Friday in Alcúdia. The scenario was part of the Technical Sessions on Family Road Safety, held on Thursday and Friday, and featuring training for over 100 local police officers as well as other security professionals from across the Balearic Islands.
The simulation was organised by the Smart Baby Foundation, with the participation of the Mallorca Fire Brigade, Alcúdia Local Police, and emergency medical teams from 061 IB-Salut, along with 47 fourth-grade students from CEIP Porta des Moll, who acted as the bus passengers.

Successful rescue simulation in Alcúdia: children evacuated from car and school bus during traffic accident drill
The drill included a guided evacuation of the children from the bus, ensuring safe and orderly procedures. Later, emergency crews demonstrated the rescue of the child passenger from the car using the Pediatric Immobilisation and Extraction System (SIPE), a technique that maintains the alignment of the head, neck, and torso while the child remains in the car seat, allowing safe extraction during emergencies like traffic collisions.
“It’s been an extremely positive experience,” said Llúcia Pons, coordinator of the road safety education program. “These practical sessions are crucial for refreshing and reinforcing our response skills in complex scenarios, especially when children are involved,” she concluded.
