From November 25th to 28th, a group of 54 seniors over the age of 60 took part in a cultural trip to Perpignan, organised as part of an initiative designed to promote active ageing and social participation. The experience offered them the opportunity to explore the strong historical connection between Mallorca and the French city, which once served as the capital of the Kingdom of Mallorca.

The purpose of the trip was to provide an enriching cultural activity while strengthening social interaction and bringing older citizens closer to a heritage closely tied to the island’s past.

A cultural trip to Perpignan brings the legacy of the Kingdom of Mallorca closer to senior participants

Toni Fuster, head of the Presidency department, joined the group during one of the days to follow the activity firsthand and listen to participants’ impressions. He highlighted the enthusiastic response to the programme, noting that it allows seniors to discover a remarkable historical legacy while enjoying cultural activities and shared moments. He also emphasised the growing interest in this type of initiative, recalling that the cultural travel programme began with a successful trip to Menorca attended by more than 200 people.

The itinerary featured visits to notable medieval sites in southern France, including Besalú—considered one of the best-preserved historical towns in Catalonia—and the old quarter of Perpignan, with landmarks such as Saint John’s Cathedral, the Campo Santo, the Sea Loggia, the Castellet and the Palace of the Deputation.

One of the highlights was the tour of the Palace of the Kings of Mallorca, the emblematic monument from the period when Perpignan was the capital of the kingdom, along with visits to Casa Xanxo and Palais Pams. The group also travelled to the coastal town of Collioure, historically linked to the Mallorcan monarchy, and explored its harbour, old town and castle. The trip concluded with a visit to the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres.
