The new composting plant planned for Llucmajor stands out as the most significant project within the 2026 budget for the island’s Department of Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports. Construction began in February, and the facility will receive €14.2 million from the EU’s Next Generation funds. The total investment reaches €30 million, of which €20 million will be financed by European programs.

The plant is designed to process up to 21,000 tonnes of organic waste annually and forms part of a broader initiative to improve environmental management across the island. Overall, the department will manage €54 million next year, representing a 39% increase compared with the consolidated accounts of 2025.

Future composting plant. More funding for mountain refuges and dry-stone routes

Funding for public estates and the network of mountain refuges will increase to €2.8 million, up 11%. Among the key projects is the adaptation of the new Paloma Blanca refuge in Banyalbufar, which has a budget of €126,000 and will become the eighth shelter incorporated into the islandwide network.

The Dry-Stone and Hiking Unit will also receive a boost, with €550,000 allocated to the creation of a new Camino de Santiago–inspired walking route across Mallorca. The trail is planned to pass through ten municipalities: Escorca (Lluc Sanctuary), Caimari, Selva, Inca, Lloseta, Binissalem, Alaró, Consell, Santa Maria del Camí, Marratxí and Palma.

The budget also includes €124,000 for the interpretative centre at Sa Dragonera Natural Park.

Support for hunting activities and equestrian sports

The Island Hunting Directorate will operate with nearly €2 million, further strengthening support for the hunting sector. Funds include €160,000 for the third edition of the Hunting and Rural World Fair and €16,000 for statistical analysis of game species.

Meanwhile, the Mallorca Equestrian Sports Institute will manage €5.6 million—an 18.5% increase from 2025. Investments in racetrack facilities will rise by 85% to €1.7 million, and funding for the Balearic Trot Racing Federation will increase by 12% to € 1.4 million.
