Spain’s Ministry of the Interior has launched a new intensive monitoring and enforcement campaign focused on school transport, running until January 23, aimed at strengthening road safety for daily journeys made by schoolchildren.

The initiative addresses a particularly sensitive area of road safety, as more than 630,000 children rely on school transport every morning. During the campaign, police forces will increase roadside checks and inspections of vehicles dedicated to student transport.

Officers from the Traffic Division of the Guardia Civil, along with participating local police units, will focus on speed compliance, driver distractions such as mobile phone use, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, which remain among the leading risk factors in accidents involving school buses.

Special attention will also be given to the use of seat belts in school buses equipped with these systems, due to their proven effectiveness in reducing serious injuries.

In addition, the campaign includes technical and administrative inspections, ensuring that vehicles meet safety standards, carry the required authorizations and documentation, and that drivers comply with licensing requirements, training standards, and regulated driving and rest times.

Road safety authorities emphasize that a high proportion of incidents involving children occur while boarding or leaving the vehicle, highlighting the need for vigilance in school zones and bus stops, as well as the importance of road safety education and adult responsibility.

Through this campaign, the Interior Ministry aims to reduce risks, promote compliance with safety regulations, and ensure safer school transport across Spain.
