The Consell Insular de Menorca has opened the exhibition “Josep Bagur. Humanism and Resilience” in Ciutadella, a retrospective show that highlights the artistic, intellectual and human legacy of one of Menorca’s most influential cultural figures of recent decades.

Hosted at the Sala Municipal de Exposiciones El Roser, the exhibition brings together 59 paintings from private collections across the island and mainland Spain. The selection offers a comprehensive overview of Bagur’s creative evolution and reveals a visual language rooted in humanism, social reflection and emotional depth.

The opening ceremony was attended by the President of the Island Council, Adolfo Vilafranca, and the Councillor for Culture, Education, Youth and Sports, Joan Pons Torres, along with institutional representatives and members of the cultural community. The exhibition was presented as a public tribute to a lifetime devoted to art and cultural dissemination.

Menorca pays tribute to Josep Bagur with a major retrospective exhibition in Ciutadella

The exhibition is organised into two main sections: portraiture, showcasing Bagur’s ability to capture the psychological depth of his subjects, and thematic works, featuring key series that explore identity, collective memory, social commitment and spirituality. The exhibition invites visitors to engage emotionally and reflect on universal human experiences.

Beyond his artistic output, the exhibition also acknowledges Josep Bagur’s role as a cultural promoter. His work as a curator, lecturer and driving force behind major cultural initiatives has made him a cornerstone of Menorca’s artistic life and a mentor to successive generations.

The exhibition will remain open in Ciutadella until 28 February and will later move to the Centre d’Art Ca n’Oliver, where it can be visited from 28 March to 14 June. Admission is free, and a guided tour led by the exhibition curator, Carles Jiménez, is scheduled as part of the programme.
