The Government of the Balearic Islands has launched a programme of activities to mark the International Day of Forests, celebrated on 21 March. The initiative, coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment through the Xarxa Forestal, will take place throughout the week with the aim of bringing the value of forest ecosystems closer to citizens and promoting greater environmental awareness across the islands.

This year’s programme is held under the theme “Forests and food”, highlighting the connection between forest ecosystems, food resources, environmental sustainability and economic development. Forests play a crucial role in biodiversity conservation, climate regulation and social wellbeing, while also representing an important cultural and economic asset for the region.

The programme includes activities aimed at both the general public and the educational community. One of the main initiatives is the selection of the finalist drawings from the Ni 1 Foc al Bosc! competition, an awareness campaign focused on preventing forest fires, now in its twentieth edition in Mallorca and its fifteenth in Ibiza. Educational workshops and awareness activities on wildfire risk prevention will also take place in schools across Menorca.

Among the scheduled events is a guided visit to the Menut Forest Nursery (CEFOR), where participants will learn about conservation work and the cultivation of native forest species. A new activity this year is the children’s initiative “Mans al bosc!”, to be held in the Menut woodland area, designed to introduce younger participants to the ecological value of forests through interactive and educational experiences.

Another highlight of the programme will be “Un tast de bosc”, an activity open to the public on 22 March in Menut (Escorca). This event will explore the relationship between forest resources and gastronomy, focusing on the traditional use of ingredients sourced from woodland environments.

The week will also feature several informative lectures addressing the historical evolution of forests and the importance of native forest plants in island landscaping. Additionally, on 21 March a practical workshop will take place at the public estate of Gabellí, in the Fonts Ufanes area of Campanet, where participants will learn how to build traps to control the banyarriquer, a pest affecting holm oak forests in the Balearic Islands.

Through this programme, the regional government aims to strengthen public engagement in forest conservation and promote sustainable management of forest ecosystems throughout the Balearic Islands.
