More than 800 elderly people across the Balearic Islands have already participated in group emotional management workshops promoted by the General Directorate of Mental Health, an initiative aimed at strengthening emotional wellbeing, preventing vulnerability situations and promoting personal autonomy among older adults. The programme forms part of the Balearic Government’s priority actions in the field of mental health and emotional wellbeing.
The Regional Minister of Health, Manuela García, together with the Director General of Mental Health, Carme Bosch, attended one of the “Emotions that Give Life” workshop sessions held in Palma at Espai Consum in collaboration with the Ayuntamiento de Palma. María del Carmen Esparza, Director General for Health, Consumer Affairs, Markets and Fairs, also attended on behalf of the local council.
The programme has already delivered forty workshops throughout the Balearic Islands and plans to reach a total of eighty sessions. Its main objective is to provide elderly participants with practical tools to recognise, understand, express and manage emotions in a healthy way, contributing to a better quality of life and greater emotional stability.

More than 800 elderly people take part in emotional support and wellbeing workshops promoted by Mental Health services
During the sessions, participants work on emotional self-awareness, emotional regulation, self-esteem and personal confidence in daily life. The activities also help combat unwanted loneliness and encourage social interaction, mutual support and community participation among older adults.
The General Directorate of Mental Health highlights that elderly people represent a particularly vulnerable group, often exposed to situations of isolation, loss of purpose and prolonged emotional suffering, especially during periods of grief, major life changes or functional decline. Economic, social and residential difficulties may further affect their psychological and emotional wellbeing.
In this context, the “Emotions that Give Life” programme promotes a preventive, community-based and participatory approach that enables participants to share personal experiences and acquire emotional resources within a safe and supportive environment. The initiative also acknowledges that many elderly people grew up in social contexts where emotional expression was limited or stigmatised, reinforcing the importance of creating spaces for listening and emotional support.
These workshops form part of the strategic priorities promoted by the General Directorate of Mental Health, particularly in the areas of suicide prevention and support for vulnerable groups, within the Strategic Plan for Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing of the Balearic Islands.
Through initiatives such as this, the Government of the Balearic Islands continues to strengthen its commitment to comprehensive mental healthcare throughout all stages of life, promoting local support resources aimed at improving social cohesion, emotional wellbeing and the overall quality of life of citizens.
