The Consell de Mallorca, in its commitment to promoting sport on the island, has reached the participation of 66,000 users in its activities, through different programmes throughout the year 2021. The sports programmes have been very well received and participation has been high, increasing by 33% compared to the previous year, figures that demonstrate a post-pandemic reactivation. In addition, in 2022 an umbrella programme of “Estades esportives” will be expanded and created, which is expected to increase by almost 8,000 participants, with the aim of reactivating the low hotel season by merging tourism and sport at the local level, with an increase of 584,000 euros in these activities.
The Consell’s sporting programmes include days in hotels, adventure stays in mountain chalets, races in the Serra de Tramuntana, “Mou-te!” sports sessions with second and third age groups in the municipalities – a novelty that has been well received by the town councils -, nautical and mountain activities, games during municipal fairs and festivals, the consolidated Acampaesport summer campus and the Tòfol Castanyer Training Camp.
The Consell has the objective of promoting the practice of sport as a family or among groups with less supply, which is an important complement to the existing sporting activity. The councillor of the Department of Transition, Tourism and Sports, Andreu Serra, stressed the importance of physical exercise from the grassroots level “in order to generate healthy habits and encourage regularity, as well as family practice to reinforce them.
Ninety per cent of the activities have been carried out outdoors, taking advantage of the natural surroundings of hotels and country houses, as well as the open spaces of the villages. Among the most popular programmes are the sports days in hotels, which reached 2,280 people in 2021, and the races in the Serra de Tramuntana, in which 2,105 runners took part. It is worth highlighting the high demand for the Acampaesport summer camps for children and young people, with 1,212 participants, a consolidated programme that each year increases the number of weeks and the number of participants.
In 2022, the number of tourist and sporting activities will increase significantly, multiplying the current participation by three. According to councillor Serra, “we still have waiting lists due to the popularity of some activities and, for this reason, this year we will increase investment in hotel activities by almost 600,000 euros, above all as a way of reactivating and promoting local tourism”.
