Son Espases awards the 2021 Research Prizes

This week, Son Espases University Hospital presented the 2021 Research Awards, which aim to promote scientific activity in all professional categories at the health centre and reward excellence in this field. The Son Espases awards and grants for research are an annual initiative of the Research Committee.

The financial endowment of the awards in the 2021 edition was €42,000, divided into three categories: “Best scientific publication”, which rewards the publication of an article in the journal with the highest impact factor; “Best pilot project”, which aims to support projects that can be funded in external national and international calls for proposals and, finally, “Aid for short stays in research centres” to promote collaboration with national and international research groups.

The Research Awards ceremony was presided over by the Regional Minister of Health and Consumer Affairs, Patricia Gómez. Also in attendance were the director general of Health Research, Training and Accreditation, Asunción Sánchez; the director general of the Health Service, Juli Fuster; the managing director of Son Espases, Josep Pomar; the scientific director of IdISBa, Miquel Fiol; the president of the Research Commission, Antonio Oliver, and the coordinator of the Research Unit, Borja García-Cosío.

In this year’s edition, the “Best Scientific Publication” prize was awarded to Dr. Francisco Javier Rosselló Lozano, of the Cardiology Service and researcher in the cardiovascular physiopathology and therapeutics group, for the article entitled “Glycated Hemoglobin and Subclinical Atherosclerosis in People Without Diabetes”.

The winning pilot projects were as follows: “Mechanistic insights into synergistic combinations of non-antibiotic drugs and β-lactams”, by Silvia Daiana López Argüello; “Lipidomic analysis by mass spectrometry imaging: A study of the response to Dupilumab in atopic dermatitis” by María Rosa Perelló Alzamora; “Determination of biomarkers by liquid biopsy in colorectal adenocarcinoma with resected liver metastases” by Evelin Horváth; “Evaluation of the lipid profile and therapeutic adherence in patients with acute myocardial infarction: A multidisciplinary study on compliance with clinical practice guidelines”, by Francisco Javier Rosselló Lozano and “Evaluation of hospital malnutrition in hospitalised patients (DEHOS Study)”, by Regina Cortés Aguilar.

Balance of research activity at Son Espases University Hospital in 2021

During the awards ceremony, the coordinator of the Research Unit and the president of the Research Commission, Borja García-Cosío and Antonio Oliver, respectively, presented the balance of research activity at Son Espases for the period 2020-2021.

During the last year, a total of 377 articles have been published in scientific journals with a cumulative impact factor of 1,790 points, which is more than the figures of previous years.

The year 2021 was particularly successful for the Hospital in terms of obtaining competitive funding for research from the Carlos III Health Institute, with three FIS projects and two grants to incorporate human resources into research. The total amount obtained with these public grants amounts to €947,457. In addition, during 2021, two projects funded by the European Union and the United States were obtained for a total value of €418,520.

On the other hand, with regard to the commercial clinical trials carried out at the Centre, during 2021, 77 contracts were signed with the pharmaceutical industry for a total amount of €2,330,376.
