This is the second intervention of the third Graves Plan promoted by Democratic Memory and focuses on the search for Joan Mut Jaume, the only victim identified, although the presence of other individuals murdered by Franco’s repression has not been ruled out.
The third Graves Plan promoted by the Vice Presidency of the Government, through the Autonomous Secretariat of Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, arrives this Monday, 17th January, at the municipal cemetery of Inca. This is the second intervention to be carried out as part of this third Plan, after the second phase of Son Coletes, in Manacor.

“The third Exhumation Plan continues, and now it is Inca’s turn,” explains the regional secretary for Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, Jesús Jurado, for whom “all the victims are important, and the government will put the same determination and effort into finding the remains of Joan Mut as it did in Porreres and Son Coletes”.

The Action Plan

The Action Plan proposed by the Aranzadi Science Society and approved by the Technical Commission on Missing Persons and Graves of the Balearic Islands focuses on the search for Joan Mut Jaume, the only victim known to be buried in the mass grave in the cemetery of Inca, although the presence of other individuals buried due to violent deaths during Franco’s repression has not been ruled out.

According to the Diccionari Vermell, Joan Mut was an artillery soldier in the General Luque barracks in Inca. He was condemned to death and shot. According to court case 1049/36, “in Inca, on the fifth of November of nineteen thirty-six, the examining magistrate […] had the body of the artilleryman Joan Mut Jaume transferred to the cemetery of the city of Inca, burying him in the second plot of the common grave that is on the left side of the cemetery […]”.

The intervention, directed by the doctor in archaeology Nicolau Escanilla of the Aranzadi team, will try to find out the exact location of the mass grave in the Inca cemetery from the information gathered from different sources. Two 2 x 6 metre probes will be carried out in two different plots, in the hope of finding the first human remains between 130 and 140 centimetres deep.

The third Graves Plan

The Government of the Balearic Islands’ third Graves Plan will carry out excavation, exhumation and identification of bodies in seven graves on the Balearic Islands. The work will be carried out by the company Aranzadi, following the timetable approved by the Technical Commission for Missing Persons and Graves of the Balearic Islands. The first intervention has been the second phase of Son Coletes, in Manacor, where the field work has been completed and anthropological analyses are currently being carried out. The Inca intervention is the second to be launched as part of the 2021-2022 Civil War Graves Action Plan promoted by the Government of the Balearic Islands. Interventions are also planned for the new cemetery in Sant Francesc de Formentera; the third phase of the Ses Figueretes cemetery in Eivissa; the Selva cemetery, the Mancor de la Vall cemetery and the Son Danús well in Santanyí.

The Plan is completed with six historical studies, to be carried out by the company ATICS, SL, which will focus on the mass grave of Capdepera; the cemetery of Petra; the cemetery of Palma (Carrer de Sant Silvestre); the cemetery of Porreres; the cemetery of Muro, and the grave of Cala Sant Vicenç, located in Pollença. It will also be ATICS who will carry out the restoration, consolidation and conservation of the materials or objects found in the process of excavation and documentation of the graves exhumed in the previous exhumation plans of 2016, 2018 and 2019.
