The vice-president and councillor of Sustainability and the Environment, Aurora Ribot, has met with the environmental association Amics de la Terra, to present the main axes of the project “Tanca el cercle”, a strategic plan to close the circle of organic matter in Mallorca. The meeting was attended by the island director of Residus, Juan Carrasco; the general secretary of Amics de la Terra, Sandy Hemingway, and the association’s project technician, Elisa García.

The project, valued at nearly 200 million euros and presented in the Next Generation European funds, is directly related to several sustainable development goals (SDGs) and provides for the construction of five organic matter treatment plants to be located in Marratxí, Santa Margalida, Calvià, Felanitx and Llucmajor.

Councillor Ribot explained that “when the plants are in operation, the forecasts estimate that they can produce more than 80,000 tonnes of compost per year. The planned plants will make it possible to produce a quality compound suitable for ecological agriculture, and we will reduce emissions from the transport of compounds from areas outside Mallorca.

The island’s director of Residus, Juan Carrasco, pointed out that “closing the circle of organic matter is key for the future of the island, we cannot afford the waste of resources and effort that is involved in organic matter ending up in the rejection and, therefore, incinerated”.

On behalf of Amics de la Terra, Elisa García stressed that the meeting has served to learn first-hand about the “Tanca el cercle” initiative and is confident that “this project will help us to finally have decentralised plants that make quality compost, which is so important for the island’s organic farmers”.

“Since 1996 we have been promoting domestic, decentralised and local composting. The “Tanca el cercle” project is in line with what we had hoped for. We have to reduce the weight of the waste fraction and hopefully this initiative will help us to close crematoriums to continue fighting climate change,” added Sandy Hemingway, secretary general of Amics de la Terra.
