The President took part in the Exceltur colloquium on public-private collaboration, as part of the FITUR tourism fair.

The President of the Government, Francina Armengol, took part in a panel discussion organised by Exceltur as part of the FITUR tourism fair, which addressed the reality of public-private cooperation in tourism management. During her speech, the President explained that the new tourism law for the Balearic Islands, presented yesterday, will lay the foundations for turning the archipelago into a circular destination and will involve significant improvements in the quality of work. As she explained, the new legislation “will help companies in the sector, which are already leaders in competitiveness, to also be leaders in two other areas: social and environmental”. The president indicated that, on the one hand, the law “values the workers in the sector, with measures such as the one that obliges the replacement of all beds with elevating beds”, and on the other hand, it seeks to improve “the relationship between tourism and the resident and the territory that hosts this tourism”.

In this sense, the President said that “the Balearic Islands will be the first circular destination in the world”. Under the new law, companies will have to have a circularity plan, evaluate their management of resources, as in the case of energy and water, and make use of more environmentally sustainable systems, as in the case of replacing fuel oil boilers with other boilers with more efficient systems. Furthermore, the President pointed out that all these measures will be carried out with the “support of European funds” and stated that 55 million of these funds will be distributed directly to companies to help them make these changes a reality. All of this, said the President, will place the Balearic Islands as a leader. “We hope that other destinations will join the initiative,” the President concluded.

Armengol defended collaboration and dialogue as the driving forces to achieve the transformation of the economic model of the Balearic Islands, and gave as an example the management carried out during the pandemic: “never before has a social shield been drawn up like this one, which has allowed us to talk about recovery, while we are still living in a pandemic. The formula for achieving this is the pact, it is the agreement”. The President also spoke about the management carried out in the Balearic Islands, where, through the public-private agreement, issues such as the destination of aid and the projects to be financed with European funds have been agreed. The President also recalled that 67 million euros have already been distributed from the funds earmarked for tourism.

The conference, which was entitled “Are we really cooperating? New public-private tourism governance”, was also attended by the President of the Andalusian Regional Government, Juan Manuel Moreno; the President of the Canary Islands Government, Ángel Víctor Torres; the President of Air Nostrum, Carlos Bertomeu, and the President of Palladium Hotel Group, Abel Matutes. The Executive Vice President of Exceltur, José Luis Zoreda, moderated the colloquium.
