The Department of Social Affairs and Sports has allocated 47.2 million euros (47,213,668 euros, to be precise) in 2021 to financial aid for people in a situation of dependency for care in the family environment. At the end of the year, this aid had already reached 18,444 beneficiaries and the monthly payment in December exceeded 4 million euros.
This is a financial benefit to compensate for the necessary care provided by the main carer, mainly women, to the dependent person.
Financial assistance varies according to the degree of dependency and the person’s financial capacity. Thus, for example, a person with grade I can receive between 114 and 153 € per month; a person with grade 2 between 201.59 and 268.79 € per month and a person with grade 3 between 290.73 and 387.64 € per month.
As the councillor for Social Affairs and Sports, Fina Santiago, points out, “through this financial aid there is an explicit recognition of the social function of carers and that care has an economic value”.
In addition to this financial aid, beneficiaries can receive another dependency benefit such as the telecare service or, in exceptional cases, they can combine it with the home-help service.
The number of beneficiaries of this aid has more than doubled – it has increased by 133% in the last 6 years – going from 7,770 in 2015 to the aforementioned 18,444 by the end of 2021. Likewise, financial aid for care in the family environment has risen from 2 million in 2015 to the 4 million paid out in the last payroll in December 2021, which represents a percentage increase of 95%.
