The Balearic Islands Environment Department joins a European campaign to promote the natural values of posidonia beaches

The Department of the Environment and Territory has joined, through the Directorate General of Natural Spaces and Biodiversity, the initiative “Act 4 Posidonia”, which was created within the framework of the European project ‘Posbemed 2’, with the aim of providing a common strategy for Mediterranean countries to manage posidonia beach-dune systems in coastal protected natural spaces.

Thus, a platform has been created for all interested users to make specific and concrete commitments to promote more natural beaches that respect the functioning of coastal ecosystems and the preservation of the remains of posidonia that reach the beaches.

The campaign targets beach managers as well as educators, beach-related economic sectors, scientists, foundations, NGOs, associations and the general public. By signing, the signatory can commit to different actions aimed at improving individual behaviours that promote the conservation of the marine phanerogam.

The Councillor for the Environment and Territory, Miquel Mir, encourages other institutions, municipalities and citizens to sign the commitment, given that “it is through individual behaviour and actions that respect posidonia that we can contribute to raising awareness of the importance of maintaining the natural characteristics of Mediterranean beaches and avoiding the artificialisation of protected natural areas”. The Regional Ministry collaborates with the ‘Posbemed2’ project and actively participates as the first area in the Mediterranean to have specific regulations for the management and conservation of marine phanerogams through the Posidonia Decree. It has also contributed knowledge with the preparation of a study on the evolution of the beach-dune system in the Es Trenc Natural Park.

The Consell de Menorca has joined in the ‘Beach managers and decision-makers section and has encouraged the municipalities to follow the same example.
