The “No siguis ase” campaign, run by the Directorate General for Public Health and Participation through the Balearic Islands Addictions Plan, has visited 18 municipalities in the Balearic Islands since May. This initiative, which uses awareness-raising tables, is aimed at preventing alcohol consumption at popular festivals in the towns and villages of the islands.

After two years of the pandemic, the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs has resumed this campaign, which has already visited the popular festivals of Artà, Deià, Ferreries, Lloret de Vistalegre, Maria de la Salut, Moscari, Palma, Palmanyola, Petra, Pòrtol, Porreres, Sant Antoni de Portmany, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Santa Eugènia, Sineu and Sóller. In addition, in the coming weeks, he will visit Calvià, Fornalutx, Banyalbufar, Bunyola and Costitx.
So far, 18 municipalities that have requested it have been able to set up an awareness-raising table to offer young people risk reduction messages, provide information on quantities and types of consumption and carry out voluntary breathalyser tests, as well as hand out information material.
The Directorate General of Public Health estimates that in each municipality around 200 people approach the people in charge of the tables to receive some kind of recommendation or information directly, or to take a breathalyser test, and estimates that by the end of the campaign, in the month of October, at least 24 municipalities will have attended fiestas.
The Regional Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs continues to work so that the rest of the municipalities can join the campaign and thus contribute to raising awareness among adults of the importance of acting in a preventive manner, given that they are role models for the youngest.
The “No siguis ase” campaign reminds people that alcohol may not be sold or given to people under 18 years of age. Some of the recommendations they make for those who consume alcohol are:
-Before going out, think about the night ahead of you and how you want it to end.
-If you go out and drink, return by taxi, bus or on foot.
-Eat a good dinner before you go out.
-Avoid alcohol if you are on medication, pregnant or suffering from an illness.
-If you don’t want to, you don’t have to drink alcohol.
-If you do drink alcohol, drink it slowly and alternate with soft drinks or water.
-Drinks are of poorer quality and can be more harmful.
-Mixing alcohol with other drugs multiplies the risks.
-If someone is not feeling well, do not leave them alone. Call 112.
-Alcohol generates disinhibition, increasing the likelihood of conflicts.
-If you make out, take precautions. Use condoms.
-And if they say no, don’t insist, it’s just no, full stop.
-Take care of the space or town that welcomes you; don’t make it dirty and respect the neighbours’ rest.
-If your friend is drunk, don’t let him or her drive.
