Last July, the Balearic Islands recorded the highest average daily expenditure per tourist in the month of July, according to the Tourism Expenditure Survey (Egatur) published today by the National Statistics Institute (INE). According to this survey, it was 187 euros, 10% above the national average, and in the first seven months of the year, the average daily expenditure per tourist is also at its highest level, 174 euros, 8% above the national average (161 euros).

According to Egatur, in the first seven months of this year, the Balearic Islands accumulated spending of 8,623 million euros by international tourists during their holidays in the archipelago. This figure represents 4% more than in 2019 when total spending at this point in the year was 8,304 million euros, and despite the fact that the number of arrivals is still below that of that year. In the month of July alone, total expenditure was 2,806 million euros.

In terms of arrivals, the islands have managed to recover the tourism lost during the pandemic caused by COVID-19, achieving an increase in profitability thanks to the higher spending of their visitors. Thus, the Balearic Islands closed in July with a total of 2.81 million tourists, both national and international, as shown by the Border Tourism Movement Survey (FRONTUR).

According to these data, for the fourth consecutive month the Islands have been able to register the same number of tourists that were received in July 2019, before the pandemic, while in the annual accumulated, the Balearic Islands closed July with 9.23 million tourists in total, which means having recovered 97.3% of the 9.48 million that arrived in the same month of 2019.

Of the total of 2.81 million tourists, the number of nationals arriving on the Islands during the fifth month of the year was 537,091 (+20%), while foreign travellers were 2.27 million, representing a decrease of 3% compared to those who arrived in the same month of 2019 (2.34 million).

In April, the archipelago accounted for 25.1% of the total number of international visits registered in the country as a whole, and the British market was the best performer in the Balearic Islands this month.

The Councillor for Economic Model, Tourism and Employment, Iago Negueruela, assessed the figures made public this Thursday and highlighted the importance of the Balearic Islands recording the highest average daily expenditure per tourist in the month of July, as well as the fact that practically all of the pre-pandemic tourism has been recovered. These figures show how companies have had more income during the year, and the need to focus on achieving more quality than quantity.
