79 motorcyclists have been killed on weekends on conventional roads up to 31 August, 45% of the total. On Saturdays and Sundays, more than half of the accidents with motorcyclists killed, 48 out of 92, are off the road, directly related to excessive or inappropriate speed.

This weekend, the Directorate General of Traffic is launching a new campaign focused on motorcyclists in order to control compliance with the most important rules affecting the driving of motorbikes, especially on the roads favoured by this type of driver.

With the data recorded up to 31 August, 174 motorcyclists have lost their lives in traffic accidents and, although the figure is much lower than that recorded on the same dates in 2019 when 197 motorcyclists died, we must not lower our guard and we must continue to send out a message of caution and respect for the rules.

Furthermore, 53% of the motorcyclists killed were killed on weekends, especially on conventional roads, where 79 motorcyclists lost their lives on these public holidays, 45% of the total. The data also show that at weekends more than half of the accidents involving motorcyclists (52.1%) involve off-road accidents, in which excessive or inappropriate speed tends to be particularly prevalent.

For this reason, with the aim of trying to reduce the number of fatal accidents involving motorbikes that occur especially during these weekend journeys, officers from the Guardia Civil’s Traffic Unit will be monitoring compliance with the rules by this type of driver at the roadside, as well as publicising the importance of respecting them.
