\ The aim is to encourage initiatives that help to vindicate the importance of the self-government embodied in the Statute of Autonomy.
The Consell de Govern declares 2023 as the year of commemoration of the fortieth anniversary of the promulgation of the Statute of Autonomy of the Balearic Islands. For this reason, the Government invites the citizens of the Balearic Islands, the Parliament of the Balearic Islands, the island councils, town councils, political parties, business and trade union organisations, and all other public and private entities in this autonomous community to celebrate this event.
The commemoration of the fortieth anniversary of our basic institutional rule is intended to encourage initiatives that help to vindicate the importance of the self-government embodied in the Statute of Autonomy through institutional declarations, cultural events and civic activities that can be added to the commemorative events of the Day of the Balearic Islands.
Over the course of four decades, the model of self-government of the Balearic Islands has had to respond to the challenges posed by a constantly evolving society. The commemoration of this anniversary is a milestone to celebrate and enjoy the opportunities that this legal norm has provided us with; that is why the celebration must involve all Balearic institutions and civil society. The Department of the Presidency, Public Function and Equality will create two working committees to organise and coordinate activities, both internally with the bodies of the Government, and externally with other public institutions.
Organic Law 2/1983, of 25 February 1983, on the Statute of Autonomy of the Balearic Islands, was the establishment of a system of self-government, the consolidation of the principle of cooperation between the peoples that make up the island community and an effective tool for coexistence, social, political and economic progress in the Balearic Islands, as well as the ideal framework for strengthening human, cultural and linguistic ties that unite Balearic society.
This Law has undergone two modifications: Organic Law 9/1994, of 24 March, on the reform of the Statute of Autonomy of the Balearic Islands, and Organic Law 1/2007, of 28 February. Both reforms have given the Balearic Islands more powers and have adapted our institutions of self-government to the new Spanish and European reality, thereby improving the response to the new needs of citizens.
