Agriculture in the Balearic Islands, announces the 3rd photography competition to highlight rural women on the occasion of International Women’s Day

The Directorate General for Food Sovereignty Policies, of the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, has announced the 3rd photography competition with the aim of highlighting the role of rural women on the occasion of International Women’s Day, to be held on 15 October. This third edition of the competition is entitled ‘From the sea and the land. A recognition of its women establishes four categories: agriculture, livestock, fishing and agri-food industries. According to the competition rules, the photographs must reflect the decisive role of women in the development of the primary, agri-food and fishing sectors from a social point of view. According to the Director General for Food Sovereignty Policies, Aram Ortega, it is “a recognition of the work, long invisible and in the background, of women on farms, on farms, at sea and in cooperatives”. “This is the third edition of a competition that we are proud to hold to showcase the work of an essential part of the primary sector, namely women, who are gaining more and more strength and presence”, Ortega emphasised.

The competition is open to people of legal age who are residents of the Balearic Islands. The photographs will be judged on whether they reflect recognition of the decisive role of women in food development and quality, as well as female empowerment in the agri-food sector. Works that highlight the participation of women in direct sales will also be valued, as well as positive aspects that identify women with professional ability and pride.

The competition will award a maximum of 12 prizes: first, second and runner-up prizes for each category. The prizes will consist of a basket of local agri-food products and a piece of handicraft work.

The jury for this competition will be chaired by the Regional Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Director General for Food Sovereignty Policies, the Head of the Regional Ministry of Agriculture’s Cabinet and a person qualified and recognised in the field of photography.

The deadline for submitting entries is 23 September at 14.00 hours. The photographs must be sent by post to s.alimentaria@dgagric.caib.es. The competition rules can be consulted at maap.caib.es. The winners will be announced on 10 October and on 15 October, International Rural Women’s Day, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mae de la Concha, will present the prizes at a conference on rural women, to be held at the Chamber of Commerce of Mallorca.
