This information will allow greater knowledge of trends and markets visiting the island
The Government of the Balearic Islands will now offer updated statistical data on tourism visiting Formentera. This was announced today at a press conference on the island by Iago Negueruela, councillor of Economic Model, Tourism and Employment, accompanied by Llorenç Pou, director general of Economic Model and Employment, who announced that Formentera will now have disaggregated tourism data following intensive work and coordination between the Balearic Institute of Statistics (IBESTAT) and the National Statistics Institute (INE).

Thus, the Government responds to a historical claim of Formentera, which has involved a methodological effort to have this disaggregated information for the island. These data will provide more information about tourism on the island, as well as greater knowledge of their markets and trends that may occur, both in the short and medium and long term.

IBESTAT will offer this tourist information of Formentera as it already does with the rest of the Balearic Islands, the frequency with which will be updated will be a month in summer and quarterly the rest of the year.

Excursionists, a differential element

In addition to the number of tourists, as well as their profile, their spending or origin, Formentera will now also have a differential element in the data provided, exclusively for this island.

Given the specificity of Formentera, an island where some of its visitors arrive in the morning and return in the afternoon and evening, ie not overnight on the island, has been introduced information on these visitors, called ‘excursionists’.

From now on Formentera will have statistics on the number of hikers who travel to Formentera.

Formentera, the island that has recovered the most tourist spending

Formentera shares the tourist evolution of the other islands, and as in the Balearic Islands, tourism visiting the island now is more profitable than that received before the pandemic.

Tourist spending has grown by 44% compared to 2021 and compared to 2019 is up 19%, being the island where the total expenditure is higher compared to 2019 (cumulative expenditure January-July).

Formentera is also the only island that last year was already practically normalised with respect to 2019, and this increase in spending has been achieved with the same number of tourists, which results in even greater profitability.

The Consell’s president, Ana Juan, stressed that the differentiation of data by island “fulfils a request from Formentera” and that this is “very good news because this tool will give us a more exhaustive knowledge of the tourists who visit us, of day-trippers, which we have always said Formentera needs to regulate, of tourist spending, as well as of the issuing markets; in short, data that help us to design promotional policies and that will complement those of our Observatory”.
