The student, from the University of Cambridge, has presented a paper on Alghero Catalan.
The 2nd Aina Moll Prize, awarded this year in Oxford, was given to Tristan Lee, a student at the University of Cambridge, who presented the work “Clitic climbing in Algherese Catalan: empirical findings”.

The jury valued the soundness of the research, the excellent communication of the student’s work and the possibilities for continuity of the line of research. The work explores the position of weak pronouns in modal verb periphrases in Alghero and compares it with other dialects of Catalan and with standard Italian.

This is the second year that the Aina Moll Prize has been awarded as part of the Catalan Linguistics Summer School (EDELC). The competition is promoted by the Directorate General for Language Policy of the Government of the Balearic Islands. Its head, Beatriu Defior, was responsible for awarding the prize, worth 3,000 euros.

The main aim of the award is to promote research and, at the same time, to recognise Moll as a philologist and linguist. The presentation of works at the EDELC favours direct interaction with specialists. This facilitates collaborations, co-tutorships and the creation of a support network in linguistic studies on the Catalan language.

The EDELC took place between 7 and 10 September at the University of Oxford. This year, 17 participants were entered for the prize and, according to the jury, they presented highly original works on different topics and of great quality.
